Valencia will host Half Marathon World Championship in 2018
Valencia will host the 23rd edition of the Half Marathon World Championship in 2018. La Ciudad del Running continues its rise as one of the world’s running capitals and all eyes will be on Valencia in March 2018 to see who will lift the trophy under the blue skies of Valencia. Valencia was announced as the venue for the World Championship in Monaco by the IAAF, beating out Sopot (Poland), Lima, Toronto, Minsk and Copenhagen.
The Correcaminos Athletics Club, Valencia Government, Paco Borao and the councilor Maite Grau headed up the expedition to put forward Valencia as the top destination for the race in 2018. Of the many good reasons for Valencia to be chosen, the key motivations for the choice were; world class organization, the huge popularity of the Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Marathon and Half Marathon and the Gold Labels awarded to the Marathon and Half Marathon last year by the IAAF.
The World Championship is in Cardiff (UK) this year, Valencia will take the baton and aim to show the world why Valencia is known as La Ciudad el Running. Valencia will continue to hold its yearly main Half Marathon event as normal. The world championship will have its own date in March, it will also have a different course through the city. This unique event is the culmination of years of hard work by the city and the race organizers in Valencia.
The world Championship will bring together approximately 300 of the top elite runners in the world, the race will also be designed so that all runners from around the world can take part
This is the second time the World Championship ha been held on Spanish Soil. The first was the 5th edition in 1996 in Palma, Mallorca. The event drew only 200 athletes. The World Championship in 2018, in Valencia will eclipse this figure without doubt.
