69 68 Kenya - València Kenya - València Se puede decir que Marc es como los ojos de Paco Borao y Juan Botella, los directores de técnicos de la carrera y quienes marcan los objeti- vos deportivos. Aunque, por suerte o por desgracia, el objetivo de València siempre está claro, “tratar de que el Maratón y el Medio Maratón sean las mejores carreras del mundo ese año. Y si no lo es, no debemos quedarnos demasiado lejos”, apunta Marc. Para lograrlo, ya solo hay un pequeño puñado de atletas –mas- culinos y femeninos- que se puedan acercar a las grandes marcas de València (World Record en Medio Maratón y cuarto circuito más rápido en el Maratón). “Nosotros intentamos ir llamando a los mejores del mundo para que vengan a València, y hay managers que nos ofrecen ya a sus mejores atletas, los de primera línea, para que vengan. Estamos hablando de atletas de primer nivel”. Por ello, este 2021, València presentará una lista de salida de atletas verdaderamente apabullante. “Este 2021, en nivel de Maratón nos situamos mejor que la mayoría de las majors y al mismo nivel que las que pueden decir que tienen mejores atletas firmados. Se está hablando de tú a tú entre Londres y Valencia. Po- demos decir que el resto de carreras está en un nivel inferior a València en la lista de salida de atletas. Incluyen- do Berlín a pesar de la presencia de atletas como Bekele”, confirma Marc. PERO, ¿POR QUÉ VALÈNCIA HA CONSEGUIDO ESTE HUECO? ¿Qué es lo que llama la atención de València a estos atletas? Con muchísimo menor presupuesto, el hecho de conseguir atraer a una parte de las estrellas del momen- to, pasa por varias razones. Entre ellas, presentar un proyecto serio y sólido. No solo una carrera, en València se envuelve al atleta con más cosas, con más atletas, con comunicación, con seguimiento durante el año. Pero además, los atletas que han corrido aquí “destacan que los circuitos, tanto del medio maratón como del maratón son rapidísimos, que la ciudad está genial para correr muy rápido”, continua Marc. “Pero a la vez tam- bién dicen que la competitividad es muy alta. Entre ellos se dicen que cuando vengan a València de- ben estar convencidos que vienen al 100%. Como vengan al 90%, van a quedar mal. Esa es una de las marcas de la casa en València, Marc Roig is the coach of the interna- tional elite of the Valencia Marathon and Half Marathon. He lives in Eldoret (Kenya), where he shares day-to-day life with many of the best athletes in the world. "Here in this area, Valencia is associated with running, especially with the Marathon and Half Marathon. The city is well known, and so is the football team. But look, although the Spanish League is very important, València comes before football and when people talk about the city it is because of athletics and the Mara- thon and Half Marathon". The sporting objective of the races is clear: they always try to make the Marathon and Half Marathon the best races in the world every year. For this reason, this 2021, Valencia will present a truly overwhelming starting list of athletes. "This 2021, at Marathon level, we are better placed than most of the majors and at the same level as those who can say that they have the best athletes signed up. We are talking about London and Va- lencia on an equal footing. We can say that the rest of the races are at a lower level than Valencia in the starting list of athletes. Including Berlin despite the presence of athletes like Bekele", confirms Marc.
